I’d been staring at the same graph for the last thirty minutes, but the only thing I could see was how my feelings for Thea had grown over time.
Sure, I was attracted to her.
But I’d been attracted to a handful of women over the last decade.
No, this was more than that.
I admired her.
Her strength. Her determination. Her tenacity. The pride she took in her work. The care she had for my daughter and her happiness.
“How dare you?” Manny barged into my office, making a show of closing the door behind him before advancing on me.
“What?” I drew back, surprised. “What are you talking about?”
He whipped out a folded newspaper from underneath his arm, waved it up like a weapon before slapping it down on the desk in front of me. Until that moment, the serious expression on his face had me legitimately concerned something had happened with the business or one of our clients or holdings. But when the paper hit my desk, sending a few loose sheets flying, a wide grin broke over his face.
“The wedding planner?” he jeered. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.”
Shock rocketed through my cells as I snatched up what turned out to be a tabloid—not a real newspaper. My heart thumped like a boxer warming up for a fight as I stared at the cover story.
New York’s Most-Eligible Billionaire Falls for the Unwedded Wedding Planner.
Beneath the blunt headline was a photo of Thea and I kissing at the bakery. My mind jumped back, remembering how she’d asked if someone was taking a photo, and I’d brushed her off.
Angrily, I tore open the gossip paper to see the story continue on the next page, with two more photos: one of us dancing at the club after everyone had gone, and another of us leaving the flower shop.
It wasn’t uncommon for the press to keep their eye on me. But unless news was incredibly slow in the city, they normally found nothing worth reporting, realizing my personal life was non-existent. Until now.
“Oliver?”
I ignored my friend and scanned through paragraph after paragraph detailing some reporter’s well-spun tale of how we must’ve recently met and our relationship blossomed into something so serious we’d been spending almost every waking moment together. They even insinuated that the visits to wedding vendors could be more than just a work errand for Thea.
The worst part was that it wasn’t false. It just wasn’t any of their business.
Of course, they didn’t know better. Of course, they didn’t realize Thea was planning Jillian’s wedding because I’d spent good money and effort to keep her rapidly approaching nuptials a secret from the press.
I’d always tried to keep my daughter out of the limelight. The last thing I wanted was with the stress of school and moving and the wedding for her to have to deal with this—what the reporters would say to sell papers. What they would make up to justify such a hasty wedding.
Jillian had a big heart. And I’d do anything to prevent them from battering it.
